About Dexter Beef
Dexter cattle are a minority breed cattle. They were until recent times a rare breed. They are the smallest of our native breed of cattle in the UK and were originally an Irish hill cow. Dexters are a hardy breed and with Pike End Farm grazing at over 1000 feet above sea level they need to be.
All our Dexters are traditionally reared on grass, with hay and a little barley through the winter months. All our beef steers are finished to a maturity not a weight, all within a two mile radius of the farm
All our calves stay with their attentive mothers until about nine months old guzzling lots of high quality milk, after which time they are put into a 'growing' herd where they settle into a routine of munching grass with the sun on their backs.
We do not use any feed additives on our cattle and keep medical intervention to a minimum, with the exception of worming the whole herd twice a year.
All Pike End Dexter Beef is properly hung for a minimum of three weeks to allow a real depth of flavour and texture to develop. Dexter beef is dark red/brown not bright red like supermarket beef.
Dexter beef is traditional beef, tasting like beef used to. It is fine grained and well marbled with creamy yellow fat that disappears like magic during cooking. In fact, it's the fat that keeps the meat moist and ensures a tender, flavoursome result.
At Pike End Farm we are dedicated to our herd of Dexters and we are committed to producing the finest beef we can. We sell our premium beef direct from the 'farm gate'. It is hung, butchered and packed all at Pike End Farm. Due to the slow maturing nature of Dexters our beef is only available through the farm.
